MACK IN THE NEWS
CHICAGO (November 9th, 2012) – When Thomas Grant, 50, and his wife Michelle, 41, realized they had outgrown their rental home they were worried they had boxed themselves into a corner. The couple knew they didn’t want to continue to rent a home, but they were also afraid low credit scores due to Thomas’ job loss a few years ago would prohibit them from buying a home, even though Thomas now has a job as a research analyst. “I knew I wanted to get out of a straight rental arrangement,” said Thomas. “I’m only going to be working another 15-20 years and I don’t want to rent in retirement. It’s important to me to start paying down a mortgage soon and make my cost of living much more affordable when I retire.”
The housing market continues to rebound nationally and more and more families are choosing the flexibility and safety of a rental over a traditional home purchase. Many investors seeking out distressed properties to fix up now say they just can’t find enough of them to meet the demand. MACK’s CEO James McClelland speaks with CNBC about the unprecedented demand for single family rentals he has seen in at least fifteen years.
The six-year slide in U.S. home prices and the dollar’s weakness against some currencies are driving a property-buying binge by Asians, Canadians, Europeans and Latin Americans eager to own a piece of America. Plowing money into real estate may sound like a risky venture to many Americans. But to growing numbers of foreigners, U.S. housing has never seemed a smarter investment.
Buying foreclosures to turn them into rental properties is tricky business. Mack Companies, a Chicago real-estate firm, invests in about one out of every 40 homes it inspects. MarketWatch’s Amy Hoak looks at why some make the cut and others don’t.
(Crain’s) — While the federal government is talking about renting out foreclosed homes, James McClelland has been doing it for 23 years.
In a video interview with Crain’s, Mr. McClelland explains how he got started in the business, how he finds homes to buy and what the government should be doing to fix the housing crisis.

If the name Oliver Chang sounds familiar, it’s probably because you remember this post from a couple of weeks ago. The team at MACK has been working very closely with Oliver on this very issue…how can big institutional money sources enter in to the Single Family Rental market? It’s Olvier’s contention that the only way for institutions to make a successful entry into the market is for them to partner with operators such as MACK. We, of course, agree!
It’s here! CNN Money visited MACK early this month and the feature piece can be seen by clicking here or clicking on the read more logo below. CNN’s piece centers on the amazing life cycle of a foreclosure. The property starts off being the culmination of the American for a family, unfortunate events happen in their lives, the home goes into disrepair, and significantly impacts other owners in the neighborhood and the community.
